From the Desk of John Pantozzi
Artistic Director, Theater Q Asbury

March 26, 2025

It is with a heavy heart that I announce a pause in production at Theater Q Asbury until the fall. This includes the cancellation of our upcoming show, Liberace & Liza, a Tribute: Shore Why Not? at House of Independents.

This decision was not made lightly. In recent weeks, we've lost the commitment of select donors citing current socio-political and economic uncertainty. I’ve been in conversation with each of them, and I remain hopeful they will revisit their support in the fall.

Unfortunately, the broader cultural climate has played a significant role in this decision. As the current administration intensifies its attacks on the LGBTQ+ community—dismantling federal support and pressuring private companies to distance themselves from DEI initiatives—we are feeling the ripple effects. These pressures not only threaten our financial foundation but also undermine our core mission: to give voice, visibility, and validation to LGBTQIA+ artists and stories.

As a new nonprofit professional theater company, we are not yet eligible for many forms of institutional support—be it grants, endowments, public, or corporate funding—which often require a proven track record of one or more years. Ticket sales alone cannot sustain production costs. In these early days, we are especially dependent on private donors and community allies.

To our members: We will be offering the option to carry your membership forward to the fall season or to receive a refund. Please watch your inbox for a follow-up email with more details.

And now, I turn to you. If you believe in the power of queer storytelling and the necessity of inclusive art spaces, I invite you to stand with us. Whether by making a donation or simply sharing our mission with others, your support makes a meaningful difference.

Or you can contact me directly at jpantozzi@theaterq.org to explore additional ways to help.

These are uncertain times, but they are also times that demand courage, creativity, and community. We will continue to source donors and sponsors for the fall season. Thank you for standing with us—and for believing in a future where queer art is not just seen but celebrated.

With gratitude,
John Pantozzi
